Police arrested eleven Asian-American high school students, nine of whom were Arcadia High School students, after a 2-month investigation of extortion and terrorist threats by suspected gang members against junior high school students.
Arcadia's Ken Burrows will serve as president for the 1999-2000 Tournament of Roses year. Burrows announced "Celebration 2000: Visions of the Future" as the theme for the 111th Rose Parade.

About 60 parents, teachers, and students staged an emotional show of solidarity for teacher Gary Southworth, who began a 1-year jail sentence in connection with a car crash that killed a 21 year old La Verne woman, on December 12, 1992. He pleaded guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter and 2 counts of felony drunk driving.
Students at Holly Avenue Elementary School can choose the traditional September-June schedule or attend year-round classes with 4 shorter breaks, instead of the three-month summer vacation. The new schedule has the usual 180 days, but includes 4 sessions of about 9 weeks and breaks as long as 20 days.
"Arcadia Mary," 68, whose real name was Cassie Sisterman, died after a long illness. For nearly 10 years she had called TV and radio stations, magazines and newspapers and gave tips about local crimes.
Parent Alert has developed an educational drug program for 5th and 6th grade students. Titled "It's Your Decision," it teaches youngsters some of the important facts about drug abuse. About 800 Arcadia High School students walked out of classes and gathered on the library lawn to demonstrate support for their teachers and to protest the cancellation of the senior assembly, an annual high school tradition.
