Burton Wallace Smith graduated Wednesday from Huntington High School with kudos from the President of the United States. The program at Huntington High School allowed Smith to complete classwork and take tests at his own pace.
A decline in enrollment which has threatened to close one of Arcadia's 3 junior high schools appears to be less precipitous than anticipated, and may even be leveling off. According to official figures presented by the Arcadia Board of Education, there has been a loss of 164 students, far less that the drop of 429 that was expected.

The police department has been authorized to employ four new officers which will increase sworn personnel to 73. The department is purchasing three vehicles for parking control. Also authorized was the purchase of two narcotic sniffing dogs trained for the full range of police dog work.
Isabelle Stires is retiring after 19 years in the Arcadia Unified School District. This past year Mrs. Stires has been teaching second grade at Camino Grove School. Before that she taught second and third graded at Bonita Park School. She and her husband plan to travel.
Shasta, the dog who saved Luella Ball's life several months ago when her house caught fire, has been named winner of the Dog Hero Award presented by the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
For $35 a week, developmentally disabled children can enjoy cooking, crafts, nature walks and free tennis lessons every afternoon from 2:30 PM to 6 PM Monday through Friday at the Arcadia County Park as part of the new Special Time After-School Recreation (STAR) program.
Luella Ball's life was saved by a dog named Spitz who woke Ball after a fire broke out in her home. Ball has been providing a temporary home for Spitz who is available for adoption.
Arcadia in 1989 is a changing city. Officials estimate Asians now comprise 15 to 17 % of the population and 27% of the student body. Minorities, including Hispanics, blacks and American Indians total 35% of the school enrollment.
