Focus on the Family, and Arcadia-based Christian organization dedicated to the preservation of the home, is about to move into new offices in Arcadia. The organization, which has grown rapidly over the past few years, currently has 310 employees and occupies offices in 7 separate buildings in Arcadia. The new building, located on Foothill Blvd., will be completed around the first of October.
Arcadia's Focus on the Family has a "handshake agreement" to move to Pomona. The 5th largest employer in Arcadia, with 400 workers, will move everything except a warehouse in Monrovia, to Pomona.

The Fire Department has a new, green $150,000 fire engine on loan from the California Office of Emergency Services. It is specially equipped to handle large brush fires.
Chief wants new fire station built. After a year of study using computer technology, Arcadia Fire Chief Jerry Gardner has recommended to the City Council that a fourth fire station be built in vicinity of Sixth and Live Oak Avenues.
Arcadia students will begin to learn about AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases through a program starting next February. The Board of Education will establish a committee to come up with the curriculum on the subject.
Arson is suspected in a $150,000 fire that gutted a brand new office building at 411 South First Avenue on September 11. The building housed the law offices of Pike, Wilson and Cosso.
Ordinance governing roofs given first reading by City Council Tuesday night. Following second reading and 30-day waiting period, Arcadians who construct new roofs will be required to use specific fire-retardant materials.
Residents of Arcadia, in response to a questionnaire about city services, rated the paramedic service the highest. Second highest rating was earned by the reference department of the library. Of 23,000 questionnaires sent out, 652 were returned. This is considered above average response.
New roofs and additions or alterations involving 50% of the total square footage of the roof must conform to Class A standards for buildings in hazardous fire areas, the foothill areas. Home owners in non-hazardous fire areas will be allowed use of either Class A or Class B roofing materials. In addition, alterations or repairs involving 25% or less of a roof area may use any existing material. The Council gave final approval by a three to one vote. (See 1603AN for correction.)
Arcadia High School students are able to learn about managing a major race track by participating in the Track Management Class. Students actually intern in the various departments at Santa Anita - from the stables to the front office.
An apartment fire caused the death of a 7-year-old boy despite the efforts of bystanders. The boy's mother and sister escaped injuries. The fire apparently started with a Christmas tree.
