An earthquake registering 5.5 on the Richter scale hit Australia's southeast coast at 3:28 PST on Wednesday, December 27, 1989. Newcastle, Australia's fifth largest city, suffered the majority of damage as 11 were known to have died. A city of 500,000, Newcastle has the largest concentration of heavy industry in the country.
Two commercial buildings on Huntington Drive, damaged in the October earthquake, need to be repaired or torn down. Letters from the city to the owners have gone unanswered.
A 5.0 aftershock from last October's earthquake did little damage but rattled the nerves of local residents. Three people were treated for minor injuries as a result of the aftershock.

Don's Chevron Station at the southwest corner of Duarte Road and Second Avenue was demolished by fire. Owner Don Shepherd was attempting to repair a leaking gas tank on a station wagon when a light broke and ignited the gasoline. Damage was estimated at $200,000.
The Arcadia Planning Commission has approved a conditional use permit to allow Public Storage, Inc. to operate public storage facility on a lot on the south side of Lower Azusa Road east of Roseglen.
Don Alcorn, a 20-year veteran of the Arcadia Police Department, has been named to the new post of Emergency Services Coordinator by the Arcadia City Council. Alcorn's job is to prepare an emergency plan that will cover any aspect of any possible disaster, from earthquake to fire to nuclear disaster.
Arcadia now has two patrol wagons that will be used to transport prisoners from the scene of the arrest to the station. The wagons can pick up several prisoners and book them all at once, allowing officers to spend more time in the field.
