The family of David Taylor, an Arcadia High School student who was killed in a bicycle accident last year, has presented a claim of $500,000 to the Arcadia School District. The claim was denied by the school board and turned over to the district's insurance company.
It appears residents will have an opportunity to vote in June on whether the city should help the school district with its financial problems. They are trying to reduce the budget by $1.2 million.
Police arrested 5 Arcadia High School students on campus for selling cocaine, marijuana and LSD. The arrests followed an investigation that began last fall.
Last year, Foothills Junior High students raised $800 for the Peace Corps to go to Lamotrek Atoll, Micronesia, an island in the South Pacific. The Arcadia High School Apache Marching Band will travel to Arcadia's sister city, Newcastle, Australia, in late June. Parents have agreed to make up the difference, if the $37,000 still needed cannot be raised. Besides Newcastle, where they will perform for 5,000 high school students, the band will sight-see and perform in Canberra and Sydney.
The School Board is wrestling with a list of 24 recommendations for the control of and education about illegal substances. Among the options considered are eliminating the open lunch privilege for seniors, a urine screen on students continually truant or tardy and undercover operations by the police.
