Officers of a homeowner's group fighting a proposed tennis club in the Highland Oaks area of Arcadia say that opposition to the development is mounting despite efforts by developers to win support.
Arcadia joined the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito Abatement District, making it one of the last cities in the valley to participate in a mosquito control program. The program is designed to monitor mosquitos that transmit St. Louis encephalitis, a sometimes fatal viral disease.

Carolyn Searfoss, a bus driver for the Arcadia Unified School District, has been active for 12 years in the Arcadia Music Club, the parent support group for the band and orchestra. Among other things, she attempts to measure and fit some 200 uniforms for members of the band.
When filing closed for three seats on the City Council, nine candidates remained in the running. Johnson, Worsley and Speirs are likely to draw support from the Tax Reform Committee that helped elect Haltom and Dring. Another group will try to re-elect Pelegrino and elect Hannah and Lojeski. Also running are Chivetta, Hofer and Brockus.
A group of 350-400 teachers and supporters staged a demonstration and rally before the school board meeting to express their views on the deadlocked negotiations. A mediator sent out by the Public Employees Relations Board was in the district Monday but nothing was accomplished.
