The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has passed an ordinance lifting a 25-year-old ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages at County botanical gardens, including the Arboretum in Arcadia.
Two candidates, Bob Kladifko (2,623) and Jim Bryant (2,497) who were defeated in the Arcadia school board election two years ago, emerged as winners in Tuesday's election. The third winner was Mike Allison (2,579). Marilyn Perkins (2,225) finished fourth and was not elected.
Arcadia High School students accepted a third-place trophy for their performance in the 40th Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon. The third-place award is for the North Los Angeles County region. Countywide, Arcadia ranked ninth, compared with its fourth-place finish in 1988.
The Board will decide May 11 which two of four elementary schools to close next fall. Bonita Park is the most likely candidate for closure. Comments pro and con on the four schools under consideration (Santa Anita, Holly Ave., Bonita Park and Baldwin Park) are given.
County supervisors approved a $4.7 million infusion of funds to aid mental health programs in the Children's Home Society in Arcadia. The Children's Home Society, a non-profit organization that places mentally disturbed children in foster homes, will now lose $16,000, instead of the anticipated loss of staff and $32,000.
A cooperative effort by the County Department of Parks and Recreation and the city of Arcadia will make possible the development of a segment of the LARIO bicycle trail in Arcadia joining the Peck County Park Fishing and Conservation Area and Live Oak Avenue.
Supervisors listen to protests over prison site. Five sites, including the Owl Landfill in Irwindale, have been recommended by the county-wide Criminal Justice Committee.
Assemblyman Richard Mountjoy, R-Arcadia, will sponsor an amendment to the Los Angeles County Transportation Improvement Program to provide for construction of noise attenuation barriers along Foothill Freeway in Arcadia.
Responding to a proposal by L. A. County, the Arcadia City Council has agreed to discuss receiving title to the Rose Garden area of the Arcadia County Park for the city's Arcadia Historical Museum at the corner of Huntington Dr. and Holly Avenue.
