About 800 Arcadia High School students walked out of classes and gathered on the library lawn to demonstrate support for their teachers and to protest the cancellation of the senior assembly, an annual high school tradition.
A recent meeting between Asian parents, police and school district members was quite successful, School Board Member Robert Kladifko told the Board. He said recent fights between Asians and Caucasians at the Arcadia High School and the Arcadia Library were not racially motivated.

Robert Shortell, 80, attended the World of Poetry's fifth annual convention in Washington, D.C., where he was honored with a Golden Poet Award. Shortell was a history and social studies teacher and sometime coach at Arcadia High School for 21 years.
Huntington High School started an Independent Study Program last September. The program is free and open to anyone older than 18 who did not finish their diploma. 75 students are currently enrolled in this successful program.
The Les Brown Band of Renown will perform at the annual Picnic Concert at the Arboretum. Brown is back by popular demand due to the overwhelming success of last year's concert.
About 1500 people went to a hearing before the county Commission on School District Organization to discuss the possible transfer of Sierra Madre schools from the Pasadena Unified School District to the Arcadia Unified School District. The hearing is the first step in a long process that involves approval by the state Board of Education and local voters before an area can transfer to another school district.

Arcadia Council PTA is joining with Parent Alert in sponsoring two town meetings to encourage parents and other citizens to join a community-wide campaign aimed at fighting school age substance abuse. The school board discussed the possibility of implementing AIDS education at the 7th grade level. There is currently a 2.5 day session in the 10th grade that discusses the problem.
The School Board has approved the appointment of the district's first group of mentor teachers. The 14 teachers, classroom veterans who lend their expertise to new and less experienced teachers, are named.
Santa Anita Park enjoyed its most successful opening day ever. Attendance, including the satellites, was 75,071 and $10,795,574 was wagered. In Arcadia, 65,164 passed through the turnstiles, betting $9,275,840.
Residential development in Arcadia will come to a virtual halt if a group called SOS (Save Our Suburbia) is successful in getting residents to adopt a no-growth initiative it plans to put on the next city ballot.
