Immediately after passing a balanced budget of $25.4 million, the Arcadia Board of Education eliminated another $265,854 worth of jobs from the district payroll to help provide pay hikes for district employees.
Since beginning its scrip program citywide in September, the Arcadia Educational Foundation is now selling (indirectly) about $25,000 worth of groceries a week and thereby raising $1500 weekly for the Arcadia School District.
The L.A. County Board of Suprevisors chose Santa Anita Associates to manage and make roughly $750,000 worth of improvements to the Santa Anita Golf Course. They are expected to renovate and expand the clubhouse and add a new banquet room and cocktail lounge.
Arcadia police seized more than 154 lbs. of cocaine worth an estimated $70 million and arrested 4 Colombian nationals in the largest drug haul in the city's history. Homes on Fairview Avenue, Arcadia Avenue and Huntington Drive were raided.
Due to a shrinking budget the audio-visual department of the Arcadia Public Library has been closed by the City Council. The Arcadia school system has been offered the films and equipment, worth approximately $100,000. The cuts in the library budget will also mean reduction in personnel and operating hours. These matters are discussed.
An application for state funds to make $8.5 million worth of repairs in 6 Arcadia schools is moving ahead. Funds for the repairs, from the Leroy F. Greene State School Building Lease-Purchase Program, a bond measure, have been exhausted. However, another bond issue, coming up in the June 1990 election, is expected to pass and provide money to continue the program.
