First Avenue Middle School celebrated the 26th birthday and life of teacher Jennifer Castillo with a ceremony and the release of over 900 balloons. She taught 6th grade Algebra and introductory Spanish. She died February 8 of heart failure.
Dr. William E. White will be honored by the Alpha Auxiliary of the Methodist Hospital foundation. White has practiced for 40 years in the Sierra Madre and Arcadia areas.
Twenty-three high school students from throughout the San Gabriel Valley were honored for their volunteer community service. The 2003 Youth Volunteer Award program was held at the Arcadia Community Center. Those recognized from Arcadia are Kelly Cole, Hannah Han, Jennifer Hsieh, and Heather Sayers.
Arcadia Police Department officers John Jurman and Jennifer Casillas received life-saving medals, and Stan Flores received the Medal of Merit for helping in the arrest of a kidnapper.
Four new police officers started patrolling Arcadia on December 24, 2000, Christmas eve. Their names are Jennifer Casillas, Brett Bourgeous, Jay C. Huang and Sal Piscopo.
Jennifer Consalvi and Julie Gu, both of Arcadia High School, went to Washington DC to participate in the Presidential Classroom Scholar's Program. They met with Congressman David Dreier and Ralph Nader.
