Arcadians: "No" on Measure A, the repeal of Utility Users Tax (UUT) by Joan Schmidt. The utility tax is 12.5% of the city's $54.9 billion General Fund.
The terms of G. Michael Allison, Robert Kladifko and James Bryant will expire on June 30. Bryant will stay on for another term, to be joined by newcomers Michael Lamb, 41, a 20-year resident and funeral director and Maryann Gibson, an 11-year resident and PTA Council President.
Joan Hallett, secretary to the City Librarian, died Tuesday at Huntington Memorial Hospital. She was struck by a car on Saturday and never regained consciousness. Joan had worked at the Arcadia Public Library nearly 40 years.
Outstanding Educator Awards honor 17 area teachers, presented by Assemblymember Mike Fong. Grace Shahinian from Camino Grove Elementary (Arcadia Unified School District) was among those honored.
Santa Anita Park Opening Day this season was December 28, 2019. Mike Smith, Hall of Fame jockey, rode 4 stakes winners, including Omaha Beach for Grade 1 record. The attendance was 35,085.
Officer Mike Blair, with his partner, Rick Merkh of the South Lake Tahoe Police Dept. won a silver medal in the golf competition at this year's California Police Summer Games in Sacramento.
Honorees of Arcadia Chamber 2015 Business Awards include Patricia Colonello of Mountain Views News. Business Person of the Year went to Kin Hui of Arcadia, CEO of Singpoli Group. Business of the Year went to Sierra Auto Honda, a family owned business. Raquel McLaughlin and her mother were awarded New Business of the Year.
Ready to rumble. Two of the nation's best 4-year-olds, California Chrome and Shared Belief, will squre off at Santa Anita Park tomorrow. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will ride Shared Belief. The two horses finished third and fourth in last fall's Breeder's Cup Classic. So this rematch is highly anticipated in tomorrow's San Antonio Stakes. See also Pasadena Star News, p. Vote centers open for San Gabriel Valley's 49th Assembly District special election. Vote centers will remain open from 10 AM to 7 PM every day for in-person voting or to drop off completed vote-by-mail ballots. The seat was vacated by Democrat Edwin Chau or Arcadia when California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Chau to serve as judge in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Democrat Mike Fong runs against Republican Burton Brink in this race. The 49th Assembly District includes Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and portions of Montebello and South El Monte.
