First Avenue Junior High was one of 3 area schools to receive the state Dept. of Education's Distinguished High School and Middle School Awards. Arcadia's Foothill Jr. High received the award in 1988. The other winners included San Marino High School and the L. A. County High School for the Arts at Cal State Los Angeles.
The Arcadia Board of Education will study the environmental impact of new uses and the addition of lights at Dana and First Avenue Middle schools and the Arcadia High School softball field.
17 students at Arcadia Alternative High School signed up as owner/operators of Medi-Kit Company, part of a 13-week Junior Achievement program sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club. The Medi-Kit auto safety first-aid kits sell for $8.
Arcadia High School opened the school year with an added 800 9th grade students, bringing total enrollment to 3050. 50% of the students are new to the school.
Burton Wallace Smith graduated Wednesday from Huntington High School with kudos from the President of the United States. The program at Huntington High School allowed Smith to complete classwork and take tests at his own pace.
The Board of Education welcomed Beverly Rodriguez, assistant principal at Roosevelt Junior High School in Glendale, as the new principal for First Avenue School.
