The Arcadia Police Department has filed murder charges against Lisa Melinda Welchert, an alleged drunk driver involved in a fatal accident on Huntington Drive which killed John Chan.
The family of John Chan, the 44-year-old Arcadian who was killed by Lisa Welchert in a drunk driving traffic accident, filed a claim against the City because they feel the police officers left Welchert apparently passed out in her car and returned to their patrol cars, allowing her to escape from the police in her automobile.
The family of John Chan has filed a claim aagainst Arcadia and the police, saying officers' negligence led to his death. Chan died in a traffic accident in February.
At the Board of Education annual organizational meeting, three members, Maryann Gibson, James C. Romo, and John R. McClain were officially sworn to begin their new term of office. A profile of McClain, the new 1999-2000 board president, is presented.
Services were held Tuesday in Arcadia for Robert John Pierson, who died of AIDS-related illness on March 21, at the age of 41. Pierson, who grew up in Arcadia, authored "The Beach towns: A walker's guide to LA's Beach Towns" and was co-author of "LAbyrinth: A student's guide to Los Angeles." At the time of his death he was living in West Hollywood and teaching at USC.
Two men, including 22 year old Arcadian Jimmy Palma, were convicted of five counts of first-degree murder for shooting three adults and two children last year in El Monte.
Denise Hatch, 18, was killed in a gang-related shooting when the shooters, who stood at the corner of Wabash and Evergreen Avenues in Los Angeles, sprayed bullets into the green Honda that was carrying Hatch and 5 others. More details in article.
Convicted rapist Steven Wu, the Arcadia deacon who drugged his two sisters-in-law and videotaped himself sexually assaulting them, was sentenced to 79 years in prison Friday.
Incumbents Maryann Gibson and Michael O. Lamb were re-elected to the Arcadia Unified School District board. They were joined by first-time candidate John McClain.
Ground-breaking ceremonies were held on January 22 to celebrate the start of construction of two new Arcadia hotels - the Hilton Garden Inn and Fairfield Suites.
