The Arcadia Redevelopment Agency voted unanimously to begin condemnation proceedings of a property at 156 Santa Clara Street. The agency wants to claim the land for retail stores and office buildings. Eminent domain proceedings were begun since the city and the owners of the property have not been able to agree on the value of the property.
Arcadia High School chemistry teacher George Stapleton's Advanced Placement chemistry class won first place in the Southern California Chemical Society Competition.
The recently released statewide Advanced Placement figures show that in Arcadia, the number of exams passed per 100 seniors has grown from 24.2 students in 1984 to 80.9 students in 1990.

A law designed to protect Arcadia's oak tree population was passed 4-0 by the City Council on Tuesday. The trees listed in the ordinance may not be cut down or excessively trimmed.
Arcadia police arrested two Arcadia High School students 16, and 15, in connection with a December 11 racial incident in which a cross was burned and anti-Asian epithets were scrawled on the front yard of a home in the 200 block of Arbolada Drive. The two boys were booked for damaging property based on ethnic origin and were released to the custody of their parents.
Five young women were named princesses of the 1991-92 Arcadia Tournament of Roses Court. The winners were: Gaylin Kim Bignell, Amy Kathryn Cudworth, Michelle Dyann Lojeski, Anindita Dutta and Adrienne Marie Miller.
23 "heroes and heroines" in the Arcadia Unified School District were honored by the Board of Education in the first "Profiles in Excellence" awards. The awards were presented to "individuals who maintain a standard of excellence in their work and who represent those values and qualities which make Arcadia a special place for students." Names and positions of winners are given.
New efforts to combat truancy were outlined by school district officials. Businesses that regularly cater to students during school hours can be cited if they don't cooperate with the effort.
