The Arcadia branch of the Red Cross, originally chartered in 1948, was rechartered last October as one of 2250 national branch offices. The Red Cross is run by volunteers, with no funding from the government.

Arcadia resident Henry"Red" Austin, who helped start the private Highpoint Academy in Pasadena and worked as a dentist in Alhambra for more than 25 years, died Thursday at the age of 69.
Rose Hassing, 27, currently the director of volunteer services for the Pasadena American Red Cross, will become the new senior citizens supervisor for the City of Arcadia as of February 7. She is replacing Betty Harris, who retired in December after 20 years with the city's senior citizens services.
