Cozette Munatones, 24, a graduate of Maranatha High School who currently attends USC, will represent Arcadia in the Miss California USA Pageant on November 23-24.
Clyde Condon, Arcadia clinical psychologist, was recently named the 1989 Psychologist of the Year by Division 31 of the American Psychological Association. For the past 3 years, Condon has practiced at Arcadia Counseling and Psychiatric Associates, where about 1/3 of his patients are children.
The city's new graffiti removal program has logged at least 72 cases since Jan. 28 in which residents have asked the city to remove graffiti free of charge. In November, for the first time, the City Council allocated $20,000 for graffiti removal.
The Santa Anita Seniors Tuesday Club celebrated the 102nd birthday of Victor H. Christen. The Arcadia resident was also a guest on the Johnny Carson Show on his birthday.
Many of the local Chinese community, including members of the Arcadia Chinese Association, said they support the city council's decision to keep an ordinance requiring 2/3 of any business sign to be written in Roman letters.
Newly chosen members of the Arcadia Tournament of Roses Association Royal Court of 1990-91 are: Maria Isabel Algara, 17; Bonnie Burkhalter, 17; Melissa Kaliel, 16; Danielle Kennedy, 17 all of Arcadia High School. Also Krysty Keuhfuss, 17, of Alverno High School.
The Arcadia Rotary Club awarded grants totaling $4,990 to 17 teachers at the February 13 Arcadia Board of Education meeting. Grants ranging from $175 to $300 were given to individual teachers to help with special classroom projects. The teachers represented 5 of the 6 Arcadia elementary schools, all 3 junior high schools and both Arcadia and Huntington high schools.
The new CAS (2) program, an acronym for Curriculum Alignment System and Comprehensive Assessment System, will replace the California Assessment Program (CAP), the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), and the District Minimum Proficiency Tests. CAS (2) testing will begin in November for high school seniors, with all other grades to take the test in the spring. Advantages of the new test are given in the article.
The Arcadia Unified School District's scores on the California Assessment Program went up in math for all grades this year, but down in reading in the 3rd and 6th grades, while 8th grade students showed an increase in reading. Other figures are also given in the article, as well as a chart of scores for each AUSD school on page A-2.
First Avenue Junior High was one of 3 area schools to receive the state Dept. of Education's Distinguished High School and Middle School Awards. Arcadia's Foothill Jr. High received the award in 1988. The other winners included San Marino High School and the L. A. County High School for the Arts at Cal State Los Angeles.
