Some members of Arcadia Christian Academy's boys basketball team acted as heroes after a 65 year-old woman lost control of her Mercedes and ran it through a group of children and adults in Eagle Rock, where the team attended a game. The boys ran to the scene and helped lift the car off two children and an adult. There were no fatalities.
The city has taken a second pumper truck out of service following a July 4 incident in which a water pump failed to engage on a fire truck. The two engines that malfunctioned were bought from Kovatch Mobile Equipment Fire Apparatus. David Contreras died in the July 4 incident. See related story, Arcadia Weekly, July 11, 2002, p. 8.
Arcadia printer Jamie Cambrelen assists as many as 800 people a week with twice a week food distributions. He works the program out of his home and the New Christian Life Center church.
Arcadia considers joining Monrovia in reviving the Blue Star Program, in which families of men and women in the armed forces can display a symbol of that fact on their home. The matter will be put on a city council agenda in the future.
Altrusa International, Inc. of Arcadia, an international association of business and professional women and men who volunteer to make their communities better, will host the 48th annual District 11 Conference. Dena Spanos-Hawkey, director of literacy services for Monrovia, Arcadia and South Pasadena, is the keynote speaker.
Christina Aragon, Assistant Superintendent of business services at Arcadia Unified School District, totaled her district car that she uses as a personal vehicle. It is part of her salary package. Arcadia School Board members and Superintendent Mimi Hennessy defended Aragon in media coverage.
Assemblywoman Carol Liu has moved her campaign headquarters to 921 S. Baldwin Avenue, Unit D, in her bid for re-election in the 44th Assembly District. Liu's district stretches from LaCanada to Duarte, including all of Pasadena, and Eagle Rock in Los Angeles.
The National Guard Armory building has been demolished and a portion of Arcadia Police Department, that recently housed the men's and women's locker rooms, has been demolished to make way for construction of a new $16 million police facility. A ceremonial groundbreaking will take place in the area behind the current police facility at 250 W. Huntington Drive, on September 28.
The Arcadia City Council approved the design for a proposed addition to the new car showroom at Rusnak Mercedes-Benz. The dealer wants to build a two-story, 2644 square feet addition to the southeast corner of the showroom. The City council approved additions to other businesses as well.
The City Council offers $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and charging of the killer(s) of Arcadia resident Charlotte Cole. The City Council offers a $15,000 reward for information leading to the killer of two hit and run victims. The victims were an elderly man and his grandson.
The City Council chose an appropriate depiction of racehorses in full gallop with their jockeys hunched low, designed by artist Paul Tzanetopoulos, for the artwork to span the Huntington Drive/Second Avenue railway bridge.
The Golden Apple Award was given to Jim and Sharon Eberhardt for outstanding community leadership, especially for volunteering in support of education in Arcadia.
Arcadia City Councill will look at possible changes in the city code on floor area ratio (FAR), lot coverage, and design review for single-family homes. FAR refers to the combined floor area of buildings on a lot, compared to the size of the lot. Arcadia has a lot coverage rule that single-story homes can cover 45% of the lot and 2-story dwellings 35%. Arcadia currently has a citizen-run design review effort within homeowner associations in northern parts of Arcadia, but no citywide system.
