Arcadia Unified School District kicked off the 2001-2002 school year with its annual Back to School Barbeque. Kiwanis Club of Arcadia sponsored the event.
Fifty-seven high school students throughout the San Gabriel Valley participated in Congressman David Dreier's annual Youth Volunteer Award program. Winners will be presented and honored today.
Volunteers In Patrol is a new program to be launched by the Police Department. Volunteers will be trained to conduct vacation house checks, provide subpoena service, deliver documents, handle transportation details, direct traffic, school patrols and parking enforcement.
Stephanie Liu of La Canada High School was winner of Representative David Dreier's Youth Volunteer Award Program. A ceremony was held at the Arcadia Community Center.
Foothill Unity Center had its annual Back to School Distribution event at Santa Anita Park. The project provides new school supplies and clothing for children from kindergarten through 12th grade, to low-income families in Altadena, Arcadia, Bradbury, Duarte, Monrovia, Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and South Pasadena. Highland Oaks PTSA gives service awards and installs its Executive Board on May 28, 2003. Yoshiko Hayashi and Dick Grumm received "Very Special Friend" awards. Teacher Teresa Sarrail received the Honorary Service Award. Volunteers Cindy Forillo and Stephanie McNutt also received the Honorary Service Award. Lisa Lucas was installed for a second term as PTSA president.
Arcadia Assistance League's Bargain Box thrift store re-opens after a major $35,000 revamp including new display fixtures, carpeting, and an interior and exterior paint job. The opening celebration, starting at 3pm tomorrow, marks the 40th anniversary of Operation School Bell, a program that provides clothing to needy children. The Assistance League has 100 members and bought the store at 64 E. Live Oak Avenue in 1982.
The Golden Apple Award was given to Jim and Sharon Eberhardt for outstanding community leadership, especially for volunteering in support of education in Arcadia.
The top ten San Gabriel Valley high school baseball teams will compete in the Arcadia Elks Tournament starting tomorrow. The top ten includes teams from Arcadia High School, Alhambra High School, Monrovia High School, Maranatha High School, St. Francis High School, Temple City High School, Gabrielino High School, San Marino High School, South Pasadena High School, and La Canada High School. Arcadia Public Library received a $30,000 donation from the Friends of the Arcadia Library volunteers. The money will help pay for programs and materials.
