The Pamplemousse, which means "the grapefruit" in French, is a fast colt. Ridden by veteran jockey Alex Solis, The Pamplemousse won the 1-1/8 mile $200,000 Grade III Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park yesterday. His time 1:47.86 was the fastest in the Sham's 9-year history.

Two articles talk about trainers Bob Baffert and John Gosden, who trained horses Midshipman and Raven's Pass, respectively. Midshipman is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. Raven's Pass, ridden by jockey Frankie Dettori, won the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. Midshipman, ridden by Garrett Gomez, won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
Walter R. Hoefflin, former Tournament of Roses president, died February 24 of the complications of old age. He was 87. See also Pasadena Star News, March 1, 2001 p. A4.
Arcadia's official city birthday party will be held August 5, a date that reflects the official declaration of Arcadia cityhood by the Board of Supervisors, back in 1903. The 100th birthday party includes a scavenger hunt, the release of the anthology "Visions of Arcadia," unveiling the bronze peacock statue at Peacock Corner, a mixer at the Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum, and a birthday party at the Community Center. Former Arcadia High School baseball coach Mike Parisi was arrested June 8 on suspicion of cocaine possession and of being under the influence of the drug. The Arcadia school board dismissed him. He will begin a 2-week trial period in drug court on August 7, where he will undergo counseling, drug testing, and a 12-step program.

Investigators have concluded that the failure of a pump on a fire engine was likely caused by a mechanical and/or design defect. The failure occurred on July 4 at a car accident scene where David Contreras died. Chief Dave Lugo may pursue litigation with manufacturer Kovatch Mobile Fire Apparatus. Last winter's 4 1/2 month strike had a devastating impact on Safeway Inc., parent company of Vons/Pavilion headquartered in Arcadia. First quarter profits fell 73.5 % to $43.1 million from $162.6 million during the same quarter for the prior year.
