A weeklong science camp was held at Rio Hondo Preparatory School for first through fifth grade students. The camp is sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation.
Cal Poly Pomona hosted the 20th annual Science Olympiad for the Southern California region. Six San Gabriel Valley schools were among the 48 schools that participated. Arcadia High School student Alanna Mori competed.
As their own volunteer project, local boys from Arcadia acquire shelving and install it at Bienvenidos Children's Center in Altadena. Sam Pievac Co. in Santa Fe Springs donated the shelves.
The union for the Arcadia Police Department and the Arcadia City Council have reached an agreement. The contract gives officers a 24.4% increase in salaries and benefits over the next 4 years. The department is still down by 14 officers.
Tjio-Hervey, 26, teacher of life science and physical science at Foothills Middle School and Diaz, an attorney, will be honored as Outstanding Young Californians by the California Jaycees tonight.
Safeway, Inc., the parent company of The Vons Companies, Inc., announced layoffs which will include 28 workers at the Vons Pavilions headquarters in Arcadia.
City administrators and negotiators for the Arcadia Police Department have not yet reached a contract agreement. Officers want an immediate 10% raise for the first year and 4% increases the second and third years. City council has offered salaries that would make Arcadia police the second or third highest paid in cities surveyed.
Arcadia City Council has approved a new contract with the Pasadena Humane Society (PHS) to provide animal services to Arcadia. The contract is for $69,838, a 3% increase over the current year's agreement. The city has contracted with PHS since 1994. PHS handles dog licensing, answers calls for service and offers low-cost spay and neuter clinics. Other items were approved, including a contract with Engineered Plumbing Inc. for water mains and valves, the purchase of Mobile Data Terminals for the Arcadia Fire Department from Nida Companies, and massage therapist permits.
No resolution has been reached on the lawsuit brought by police officer Sharleen Wilson against the city for alleged sexual discrimination and harassment.
The city of Arcadia has chided the Westfield Corporation for arguing for a delay in the Caruso project's entitlement process. The city informed Westfield that the approval process will proceed on schedule.
Los Angeles County's unemployment rate reached 9.9% in December, 2008, according to the California Employment Development Department (EDD). Arcadia's was 1,500, or 5.4% unemployment.

However, Santa Anita Park race track is entertaining discussions with Magnum Entertainment Corporation concerning potential partnerships or joint ventures on a minority interest basis. The city has taken a second pumper truck out of service following a July 4 incident in which a water pump failed to engage on a fire truck. The two engines that malfunctioned were bought from Kovatch Mobile Equipment Fire Apparatus. David Contreras died in the July 4 incident. See related story, Arcadia Weekly, July 11, 2002, p. 8.
