Arcadia election mailer pokes fun at opposition as election tactics run the gamut. Resident Deborah Priester, a resident of District 5, has had enough of the city council candidate attacks and put out a mailer that encourages voters to select anyone but Roger Chandler. It depicts him at the Monopoly Man.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital sponsors a free community open house on September 17 to celebrate the upcoming opening of its new patient tower. The hospital is at 300 West Huntington Drive in Arcadia. Related story on page 14.
Arcadia Performing Arts Foundation Executive Director Sue Cook will speak on March 5 at the next Arcadia Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Forum at the Chamber's conference room.
Adams’ Pack Station in the Angeles National Forest for sale. It’s the last animal-assisted goods delivery system in SoCal. Pack donkeys carry 130 pounds of roofing material, flooring, food, tools, wood, whatever the cabin owners or renters need for their stays in Big Santa Anita Canyon, above Sierra Madre and Arcadia. Deb Burgess has owned it since 2006.
Breeders' Cup: Sport of Kings shines in Southern California at Santa Anita Park. The main attraction on Saturday, the second day, was the Classic, a 1 1/4 mile race that featured California Chrome and several other top thoroughbreds, including Jim Rome-owned horse Shared Belief, Robert Evans-owned horse Tonalist and Bob Baffert-trained Bayern. Thomas McKernan, Arcadia resident, recently retired as CEO of the Automobile Club of Southern California. He had worked with the Auto Club for 46 years. On May 1, he was succeeded by Robert Bouttier. McKernan has been elected to chairman of the Auto Club's board of directors. He will continue with several national responsibilities, including serving on the National AAA board of directors, chairing its planning and strategy effort. He will serve as vice chair of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) Deputy Superintendent Robert Leri has resigned. Arcadia High School Principal David Vannasdall will take on the additional role of Deputy Superintendent March 1 and leave his job as principal at end of school year to become Deputy Superintendent. Other personnel changes within the school district. AUSD is trying to cover a projected $7 million annual budget deficit with a proposed 5-year parcel tax. Arcadia Educational Foundation is doing its annual solicitation.
Santa Anita Park saves historic "100 to 1 Club" sign from the demolished bar of that name and refurbishes it for a new 100-to-1 Club at Santa Anita Park racetrack.
