Hale Medical Center office building planned at 289 W. Huntington Drive in Arcadia breaks ground. Construction began last week on the $20 million four-story medical office building in the southern parking lot of Santa Anita Park that will connect to Arcadia Methodist Hospital via a footbridge.

Arcadia woman was hurt in apartment fire in 900 block of West Huntington Drive on August 7. The 50-something year old woman was taken to Arcadia Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

On the 84th anniversary of the murder of Arcadia police officer Albert E. Matthies, a ceremony was held by the Arcadia Police Officers Association in his honor. Matthies is the city's only police officer killed in the line of duty. A memorial plaque at Foothill Boulevard and Northview Avenue commemorates Matthies' sacrifice and a small plaque marks his grave site at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia. Matthies was shot on July 18, 1927 and died the day after. The shooter was Frank Miller.

Arcadia based Cub Scouts go Supernova. Four Scouts recently earned the highest accomplishment a Cub Scout can receive for science, technology, engineering and math. Gianni Carrano, Vincent Docimo, Ian Parsons and John Short, fifth graders at Holy Angels School in Arcadia and members of the school’s Cub Scout Pack 114, achieved the Supernova Award.
A memorial to honor slain Arcadia Police Department officer Albert Edward Matthies, was unveiled on the 85th anniversary of his murder, at his grave site at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia.
The cause of the excess chlorine in the Arcadia County Park swimming pool that sent 17 children to the hospital on July 19 was found to be human error. Workers at the pool mistakenly primed the chemical pump twice, allowing up to 20 extra gallons of chlorine into the water.
Arcadia High School's team took 4th place among 68 schools in the 2010 National Science Bowl held in Washington D.C. last weekend. First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the importance of science education and greeted the teams personally. The team is comprised of seniors Jason Jong, Alex Wang and Eddie Xue and juniors Samuel Zeng and Derek Chou. The team coach and advisor is Cheryl Mynster.
Gerardo Cortez, 26, of Monrovia was arrested for allegedly making telephone threats to shoot adults and children with an AK-47 at schools (including Arcadia High School), a mall, and hospitals in the San Gabriel Valley last week. See also Mountain Views News, September 14, 2013, p. 1.
City to unveil Vietnam War monument today. A dedication ceremony will be held 2:00 PM at Arcadia County Park. The monument honors 14 Arcadia servicemen killed in the conflict.
Secret brothels in residential areas of Monterey Park, Alhambra dand Rowland Heights were uncovered recently. Among the conspirators arrested was Jian "David" Guo, 42, of Arcadia.
A day after the Arcadia County Park was closed for sending people exposed to excess chlorine to the hospital, the pool remained closed yesterday while Los Angeles County supervisors ordered a top-down safety review for all 27 county pools. The Arcadia pool will remain closed until the problem can be fixed to ensure public safety.
The Arcadia County Park swimming pool will be closed for the summer, to be demolished and rebuilt at a later date. The pool is 70 years old and officially known as the Norman S. Johnson Aquatic Center. On July 19, a chlorine spill sent 17 children to the hospital. The repairs would cost $80,000, so the County chose to not reopen the pool for the three weeks left of this summer.
