The Arcadia City Council has adopted an ordinance with rules for using Bonita Park's Skateboard Park. The city will follow state requirements that skateboarders must wear a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads. Hours are 8 A.M. to 10 P.M. Alcohol, drugs, and smoking are forbidden, as are graffiti and reckless skating.
Representatives from the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society presented City Council with a draft no-smoking ordinance that would prohibit smoking in all enclosed public places.
Arcadia business people apparently favor a no-smoking ordinance in principle, but might have difficulty with it in practice, according to a Chamber of Commerce survey recently delivered by City Manager George Watts. Sixty percent favored an ordinance controlling smoking. However, 60% also said they would not be able to provide segregated areas for smokers and non-smokers.
George Watts has been appointed acting city manager until the City Council names someone to replace Lyle Alberg who recently resigned. Watts, the city's assistant city manager, has served as acting city manager before. This time he has applied for the position.
Arcadia's proposed city budget will be about $24.4 million, up 8.9% from the $22.4 million 1985-86 budget, according to a report from City Manager George Watts.
Santa Anita Canyon Road, Chantry Flats closed in the ongoing effort to keep the public from breaking social distancing rules. It will remain closed until further notice.
Two ad hoc committees have been established to help the Board of Education make a final ruling on two major problems: Smoking (recent legislation has made smoking on campus legal at the discretion of the local school board) and Graduation requirements.
Dance permits for parties at the Women's Club automatically are denied until the city's Business License Review Committee specifies conditions such as when the music will end, when people must leave, and maximum capacity. The new rules follow complaints against partygoers at a wedding reception in November.
Arcadia Association of Realtors cancels city council candidate forum that had been scheduled for March 7 at the Arcadia Public Library. But since the city elections have moved from "at large" elections to district elections, the public would be better served by other, upcoming district-specific forums.
The Arcadia City Planning Commission voted 6-0 to reject the zoning change for the Santa Anita Park property from "horse racing uses" to "commercial/entertainment," saying it could not approve any changes until it sees a specific proposal.
