Last winter's 4 1/2 month strike had a devastating impact on Safeway Inc., parent company of Vons/Pavilion headquartered in Arcadia. First quarter profits fell 73.5 % to $43.1 million from $162.6 million during the same quarter for the prior year.
Steve Burd, Safeway chairman and CEO, told analysts that parent company of Arcadia-based Vons/Pavilions expects to continue rebounding from the 5-month labor strike that ended March 2004. Safeway reversed losses with a $202.7 million fourth-quarter profit in 2004.
Arcadia Police Officers Association has used a billboard to advertise its contract dispute, claiming crime is up while the number of police officers is down. The billboard is shown in a photograph.
Arcadia-based grocery chain Vons, a division of Safeway Inc., headquartered in Pleasanton, California, is closing its Vons supermarket at 2340 Foothill Boulevard, LaVerne, California. It has been there for 10 years and is underperforming.
Shares of Safeway Inc. fell 4.5 percent after the Pleasanton-based parent company of Arcadia-based Vons/Pavilions said it expects second-quarter earnings will be below Wall Street estimates.

City administrators and negotiators for the Arcadia Police Department have not yet reached a contract agreement. Officers want an immediate 10% raise for the first year and 4% increases the second and third years. City council has offered salaries that would make Arcadia police the second or third highest paid in cities surveyed.
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. has opened a new restaurant at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia, on the second story of Promenade Shops near Macy's. Red Robin is known for their "bottomless steak fries."
Safeway, Inc., the parent company of The Vons Companies, Inc., announced layoffs which will include 28 workers at the Vons Pavilions headquarters in Arcadia.
Bradbury man Steve Chen, CEO of U.S. Fine Investment Arts, Inc. Gem Coin, and other companies, allegedly conspired to commit fraud with his Arcadia-based marketing company, to plead guilty. The union for the Arcadia Police Department and the Arcadia City Council have reached an agreement. The contract gives officers a 24.4% increase in salaries and benefits over the next 4 years. The department is still down by 14 officers.
A quiz team from Arcadia High School faced tougher competition than expected in the National Science Bowl in Maryland in the second to last round, placing among the top 12 teams nationally.
