Kent Barney was recently named Shakespeare Teacher of the year as part of the Rotary Club's celebration of Shakespeare week. Mr. Barney states the many rewards of teaching, especially that of Shakespeare.

Bruce Polay has been named the new conductor of the Arcadia High School orchestra. The 28 year old teacher had been teaching at Long Beach High School.
Arthur Farr, 46, the band and orchestra leader at Dana Junior High School, has been named the Arcadia Unified School District's 1990 Teacher of the Year. Farr has been teaching band and orchestra at Dana for 23 years, as well as coaching the basketball team and teaching physical education. Dr. Ed Ryan, district superintendent, told the Board of Education that the teaching staff in the Arcadia School District must be reduced next year by 30. There are several reasons for the cut, including decreased enrollment and lack of funds. Plans for that reduction and the position of the Arcadia Teachers Association are discussed.
Isabelle Stires is retiring after 19 years in the Arcadia Unified School District. This past year Mrs. Stires has been teaching second grade at Camino Grove School. Before that she taught second and third graded at Bonita Park School. She and her husband plan to travel.

Andrew Barney, 17, a senior at Arcadia Senior High School and future aeronautical engineer, recently participated in the 8-day U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, where 50 students learned about the space shuttle, sampled astronaut training, and trained for a simulated space mission.
Non-teaching employees in the Arcadia Unified School district have voted against the implementation of a merit system to monitor such activities as hiring and promotion.
Dr. Richard Cordano, Principal of Arcadia High School, has announced that he will take an early retirement effective June 30, 1985. Cordano first came to Arcadia High in 1964 from John Muir High School in Pasadena.

The family of Kelly Salomone, a 21 year old University of La Verne student who was killed when a car driven by Gary Southworth, 45, slammed into her vehicle on December 12, has started a letter writing campaign urging people to pressure the state into taking away his teaching credential. School Board members defended their decision to allow Southworth to return to the Arcadia Unified School District.
