Environmentalists are using today's date 10/10/10 to rouse global action on the environment. They want "regular people" to work on environmental projects such as installing solar panels, planting trees, and demonstrating against polluters. In Arcadia, the California Institute of Environmental Design and Management will hold an environmental workshop with the Green Net Group today at the Arcadia Eco Home on 8th Avenue.

Obituary/death notice. A "tribute to Ed" written by Dorothy Denne. Ed Spielman, who worked for Core Media reporting on events in Arcadia and the surrounding area, passed away with his remains being returned to Ohio.
Arcadia resident and philanthropist Charles Huang donates $7.5 million to Methodist Hospital of Southern California. Huang is a global entrepreneur who owns Pasadena-based private equity company Pasaca Capital Inc. His gift will fund a high-tech operating room. Montecito Fine Arts College of Design has declared bankruptcy but intends to reopen. The college has campuses in Monrovia, Arcadia, and Brea. The school's founder is Ed Kuckelhorn and the Vice President is his wife, Trisha Zhang.
Getting a permit to install solar panels on homes in the San Gabriel Valley is costly. A Sierra Club report shows that San Gabriel Valley cities charge more than other Southland communities. The average permit cost to install a typical 20-panel system in Southern California is about $493. Arcadia's fee is $283. A chart shows the fees of surrounding cities.
An Arcadia woman has been charged with federal tax violations for her alleged role in a Monterey Park insurance scam that is the largest ever uncovered. Catherine Huang is accused of conspiracy and filing a false tax return.
Four San Gabriel Valley students recognized with the Congressional Award Medal from Congresswoman Judy Chu. Recipients were Richard Dong of Arcadia, Julieanna Guo of Alhambra, Cristie Huang from Arcadia and Melanie Phan (Claremont).
A home built by the Barker family of Barker Brothers fame will be the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Designed by architect Roland Coate in the early 1940's, the house sits on a large corner lot in the Upper Rancho area of Arcadia.

Sporting goods retailer REI has completed a solar retrofit of its Arcadia store. The roof of the store is covered with photovoltaic solar panels, which will self-generate nearly 112,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and up to 30% of the store's annual energy needs.
