A national mobile "Driving for Quality Care" campaign to fully fund nursing care came to Country Villa Huntington Drive, an Arcadia retirement village yesterday, where seniors signed its petition. Children's Hospital Los Angeles opened a new outpatient services center at 468 E. Santa Clara Street in Arcadia on November 1. It is a 10,000 square feet facility with specialty services such as ophthalmology, pulmonology, lab and radiology services, pediatric surgery, orthopaedics, gastroenterology and ear, nose and throat. The outpatient clinic is open Monday through Friday.
The official song for the 2nd annual Peach Blossom Festival, "When it's Peach Blossom Time in Arcadia," is now being sold at local music stores. Published by Hortense Seymour, the Betty Graeme tune is selling for 50 cents per copy.
Randall Weissbuch, an Arcadia resident with the Libertarian party, is running for the 26th district Congressman against David Dreier, David Miller and Russ Warner. Includes biographical information on each candidate and each one answers how they feel about issues such as illegal immigration, budget deficit and cooperation and compromise on Capitol Hill.
Mrs. Ola Sullivan, who's husband J. H. Sullivan has been in charge of the restoration of the Queen Anne cottage, presented a talk to the Arcadia Woman's Club on "The History of Nails." She gave each member in attendance a hand-wrought iron nail and piece of wood from the original Queen Anne Cottage, bound together by ribbon.
Sonia Maljian, Director of Laboratory Services at Arcadia Methodist Hospital, was invited to be one of 16 U.S. delegates to go to Egypt and help standardize their laboratory procedures. She will take part in the People to People Ambassador Program, hosted by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

Juan L. Lorenzo, 31, of San Gabriel, was charged with one count of murder and one count of assault with deadly weapon in connection with fatal stabbing of Anthony Berry, 18, of Pomona, in the 1300 block of S. Golden West Avenue. Jose Cruz Ramirez of San Gabriel was initially also arrested, but was released. Lorenzo and Ramirez work at Money Pot Shabu Shabu restaurant and became involved in an argument with Berry. Lorenzo will be arraigned January 5, 2012.
A sculptural 584-foot Metro Gold Line bridge, that will span the eastbound 210 Freeway, is under construction now. The $18.6 million bridge will be a dramatic gateway to the San Gabriel Valley. The bridge builder is Skanska USA Civil. The bridge's design concept of Native American baskets was designed by artist Andrew Leicester. The bridge should be completed in summer 2012. The bridge will have a built-in technology that can gauge damage to underground pilings after an earthquake. The entire 11.5 mile eastward Gold Line Foothill Extension through Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa is due to be finished in 2015.
With about a dozen Southern California cities, including Arcadia, potentially seeking new city managers this fall, some local officials are worried demand could drive up the salaries. Arcadia City Councilman Roger Chandler, whose city manager Don Penman is retiring in October, after 3 years as top administrator, said the opportunity to work for certain cities will outweigh the competitive market. He said this will not create a bidding war for city managers. Penman's annual salary is $214,032 plus $4000 in deferred compensation. He receives $14,076/year in medical benefits, 4 weeks vacation, 2 weeks management leave, and use of a car and BlackBerry.
Los Angeles County home sales rise slightly in November. Locally, 13 San Gabriel Valley cities saw their median home prices decline in November, while 11 communities posted increases. Arcadia ranked among the 10 California cities with the highest median home prices in November, according to the California Association of Realtors (CAR).
