23 Arcadia High School students capped third-place honors in the California State Finals of the National Bicentennial Competition. Ten Arcadia High School students have been selected as National Merit finalists, placing them among 14,000 competing for the 6100 available Merit Scholarships. The seniors are Kenneth Branson, Sidney Chung, Enrique Colayco, Bonnie Flinn, Norbert Hsu, Jacqueline Luk, Douglas McCreary, Regina Momblanco, David Park and Henry Tseng.
David Park, 17, a senior at Arcadia High School, is one of only 6 San Gabriel Valley students to receive a $2000 National Merit Scholarship, on of 1800 nationwide winners. Park is one of only 2 students in California to also be honored in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, where he is one of 500 national finalists competing for 141 scholar awards.
Elbert E. Souders, associate superintendent of schools, has been appointed interim superintendent by the Board of Education. In accepting the two-year appointment, Souders will be replacing Edward V. Ryan who resigned to accept a position at USC.
Arcadia High School's state champion Constitution Team is in Washington D. C., vying for the national title in an interscholastic competition on constitutional principles.
The National Foundation for Advancement in Arts has named Arcadia High School senior Elaine Kao as one of 105 winners of awards for achievement in dance, music, theater, visual arts and writing.
Enrollment in Arcadia schools, for the 8th school month declined compared to the same month last year. Enrollment overall, slipped from 7,553 to 7,419.
Arcadia High School seniors earned $40,403 for their district because they improved their scores on the statewide California Assessment Program. The money was awarded by the state under the Education Improvement Program.
