Becky Nelson, 17, of Arcadia High School, won both the local and district competitions for the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy speech competition.
Becky Anne Kilbourne was at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and her fiance, Jim Jaska, was at their Arcadia home. Becky discusses the events of the day. The tragedy prompted the couple to marry.

Arcadia Assistance League's Bargain Box thrift store re-opens after a major $35,000 revamp including new display fixtures, carpeting, and an interior and exterior paint job. The opening celebration, starting at 3pm tomorrow, marks the 40th anniversary of Operation School Bell, a program that provides clothing to needy children. The Assistance League has 100 members and bought the store at 64 E. Live Oak Avenue in 1982.

There’s something about Mary. Mary Hansen (photo) honored by Arcadia Rotary Club with the Paul Harris Fellow award for service “above and beyond,” according to Arcadia Rotary Club President Pat Dolphin. Mary was also selected as 2018 Senior of the Year because of her 46-plus years of volunteer work throughout Arcadia.

The Assistance League of Arcadia will open the doors of the new Bargain Box at 64 East Live Oak on Monday, April 5. The new thrift shop will continue to offer creative shopping and to fund the philanthropic efforts of the organization which has served the community for 28 years.
