Voters choose Tom Beck (District 2) over challenger Bob Harbicht, for City Council seat. Incumbent Roger Chandler (District 5) narrowly defeats challenger Joyce Platt. Preliminary numbers are in. This is the city's first district-based election.
Arcadia City Council members to submit nominees for John Wuo's vacant seat at next meeting October 20. Mayor Gary Kovacic and Councilman Tom Beck recommended former mayor Mickey Segal. Councilman Roger Chandler and Sho Tay wanted to take time to think of a few more nominees.
Arcadia resident in the 700 block of Camino Grove Avenue finds the body of a stranger in his swimming pool. The dead man is 35-year old Greg Tser-Ming Chen of Arcadia. Foul play was not initially suspected in the death. Chen's dog, a golden retriever, which was not on a leash, was found in the backyard too. Michael Goldstein, a 40-year old former stockbroker, and his wife Bridgethave opened Goldstein's Bagel Bakery at 221 N. Santa Anita Ave. after opening the original Goldstein's in Old Pasadena 5 years ago. It is the nation's first drive through bakery.
Arcadia City Council has two new members and a former city councilman has returned, according to semi-official results of the all-mail ballot election. Tom Beck, a retired attorney, and Sho Tay, a retired businessman, are new. Roger Chandler is the returning councilman.
The mysterious death of Lainie Cole, whose body was found in the lake at Peck Road Water Conservation Park, is still unsolved. Autopsy results are pending. She leaves behind a 12-year-old daughter, 15-year-old son, and a toddler.
Alhambra man Isaac Campbell was sentenced to the maximum of 11 years in prison for killing his girlfriend Liya "Jessie" Lu, 31, of San Gabriel, and then putting her body in a trash can full of kitty litter in the backyard of Campbell's friend in Arcadia.
Sex offender Jaime Elvis Elizondo, 35, of San Gabriel, was sentenced this week to 30 years to life in prison for molesting a 5-year-old girl at a mall bookstore in Arcadia in 2008.
Sara Olivia Bravo, 28, of La Puente, is being charged in a pretrial hearing with second degree murder and vehicular manslaughter for the death of a 3-year-old boy, Talmin Moye II.
Brandon Landreth, a former John Muir High School (Pasadena) history teacher, was sentenced to 35 years to life, in state prison for killing Arcadia man Justo Cesar Morales, nearly 3 years ago. Authorities believed Landreth shot Morales because Morales was dating Landreth's ex-wife.
Five running for three Arcadia City Council seats. The five are Tom Beck, a retired Pasadena attorney, Sho Tay, a retired businessman, Roger Chandler, a former Arcadia City Councilman, Paul Van Fleet, an insurance agent, and Burton L. A 20-year-old Arcadia resident charged with murdering his father remained in custody. The son is charged with the strangulation death of 48-year-old Wenda Peter Liu in their Longden Avenue home.
A 19-year-old man Matthew Zamora, could face a 25 year prison sentence for shooting and killing 24-year-old Joseph Romero of Arcadia, on June 16, 2012, on the 5200 block of Tyler Avenue in unincorporated county area near Arcadia and El Monte.
Bowen Du, 19, an Arcadia man who was charged with felony vehicular manslaughter in the death of 16-year-old Arcadia High School student Alice Zhang, has pleaded not guilty. Du faces up to 6 years in state prison for vehicular manslaughter and up to 3 more years for causing serious injury to Zhang's friend Priyanka Patel, 16, of Upland.
Arcadia stockbroker Richard Robert Russo was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing his wife Carmen one year ago. He faces 50 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Juan Lorenzo, 33, of San Gabriel, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in the 2011 stabbing death of 18-year-old Pomona man Anthony Berry. Lorenzo was working at Money Pot Shabu Shabu Restaurant in the 1300 block of S. Golden West Avenue, when he got involved in an argument with Berry.
