Arcadia Woman's Club invites local residents to holiday fashion show fundraiser on Saturday, November 9 at the historic clubhouse at 324 South First Avenue. The cost is $50 per person.
Arcadia Woman's Club celebrates the 90th year of the construction and dedication of their clubhouse. The club is also applying for historical preservation landmark designation for its clubhouse. One of the club's first civic projects was establishing a library in Arcadia in 1914. After receiving approval from the county, a small library building at the southeast corner of First Avenue and Indiana (Wheeler) Street was established. Seven firefighters were injured in Arcadia house fire on White Oak Drive. The Arcadia Fire Department (AFD) required assistance from Monrovia, Sierra Madre, El Monte, and Los Angeles County. Six from AFD were treated at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. The seventh firefighter, from Sierra Madre Fire Department, remained hospitalized in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Pasadena. The house sustained extensive loss. Nearby residents wondered if the AFD needed so much help from outside fire departments because of recent cuts to the AFD.
Arcadia first responders help in deadly California fires, due to Mutual Aid agreements. Arcadia police have been helping with the Woolsey Fire in Malibu while Engine 105 of the Arcadia Fire Department was deployed to help in Ventura County.
Arcadia Police Department Chaplain Tom Shriver (shown in photo) and other chaplains sponsor a Law Enforcement Appreciation Service at the Church of the Transfiguration in Arcadia. The service was dedicated to fellow officers killed in the line of duty in 2002. None were from the Arcadia Police Department.
