El Monte man pleads guilty to killing boss in office. Zhong Qi Chen, 63, pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his boss Yining Xie, 58, of Arcadia, at a newspaper office in Alhambra in 2018, at The China Press, 2121 W. Mission Road, Alhambra, CA.
El Monte man gets 21 years for killing boss at newspaper's office. Zhong Qi Chen, 64, of El Monte, was sentenced. He pleaded guilty in March to the voluntary manslaughter of Yining Xie, of Arcadia, at The China Press in Alhambra at 2121 W. Mission Road, Alhambra, CA.
Six candidates vying for two seats on Arcadia City Council in the April 12 all-mail-in ballot. Current Mayor Gary Kovacic is terming out this year and Councilman Mickey Segal is not seeking re-election. Among those running are three former city councilman-- Peter Amundson, Bob Harbicht, and Sheng Chang. Also running are Burton L. Brian Simpson was arrested by Arcadia Police Department after allegedly trying to defraud the Foothill Federal Credit Union of $59,000 through a fictitious car loan. It was a sting operation by the Arcadia Police Department.
A Westfield poll shows four candidates in close contention for three seats in Tuesday's City Council election. The top four contenders are ex-Council members Sheng Chang and Bob Harbicht, current mayor John Wuo, and newcomer Peter Amundson.
Arcadia City Council today will once more reconsider whether to allow customer-requested address changes in light of concerns about a Chinese superstition involving the number four. Since the number four sounds like the word for death in Mandarin and is considered unlucky, some realtors and residents have argued that addresses that end in the number four are more difficult to sell and affect home prices. The cost of processing an address change would be about $2600.
Former Mayor Roger Chandler and first-time candidate John S. MacDonnell have joined incumbents Barbara Kuhn, Sheng Chang and Gary Kovacic in pulling papers to run for four open seats at the council elections April 14, 1998.
Natalie Innocenzi, 16, of Arcadia, who attends Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada, was named the 92nd Rose Queen of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. Princess June Ko of Arcadia High School and reigning Rose Queen Courtney Chou Lee, a graduate of Arcadia High School, congratulate her. Thirty young women are the finalists for the 2009 Rose Parade Queen and Court. Four girls are from Arcadia High School. They are Stephanie Lagace, Courtney Lee, Lauren Valenzuela and Samantha Power.
Marriott seeks two hotels in Arcadia. Andrew Chang, of Continental Assets Management, and owner of Santa Anita Inn, is proposing to build two Marriott hotels on the property. His proposal seeks to add 110 rooms to the West Huntington Drive property and would include a six-story Residence Inn and a four-story Fairfield Inn and Suites (Marriott brands). The Santa Anita Inn was built in 1955. The project will require approval from the Planning Commission and City Council.
