L-R: mother, Ella Ott; Eleanora, age 2; Marshall, age 4; father, City Marshall John Ott; and Donald Ott, age 10 seated with the family dog, Booze. Marshall Ott is wearing a dark double-breasted suit with his badge.
Five police officers are seen standing for their picture. L-R: Don Ott, Harry Peterson, Louis Jack Richards, Grady Pardue, and Capt. James B. Stine. They are in full uniform.
John "Jack" Ott, dressed in Indian Headdress is seen kissing the nose of an Indian pony (his daughter seemed to remember). A large group is pictured sitting or standing near entrance to Sturtevant Camp dining room. (Camp was one of many in San Gabriel Mountains; it was up Big Santa Anita Canyon.) In back row, on left, man in dark shirt and tie next to pillar, is John C. Juvinall of Monrovia.
An association of various discontented areas seeking to secede from Los Angeles County has been formed, but the San Gabriel Valley has not yet joined. The six proposed counties are: San Fernando Valley, Canyon, Chumash, Santa Monica, South Bay and Peninsula.
Arcadia has new hiking shuttle. U.S. Forest Service starts bus service to Chantry Flat trails from Arcadia Gold Line station. The shuttle goes to Chantry Flat Road, an area that connects to trails that lead to Sturtevant Falls, Hermit Falls, and historic Mount Wilson. The shuttle will run the next three weekends. Plans to make it permanent have not been formulated. See also Pasadena Star News, September 21, 2016, p. A7.
What's next for cabins in Santa Anita Canyon affected by Bobcat Fire? Historic cabins dating from the early 1900s were threatened by the fire in September. The number of cabins decreased to 63 from 80. Most were built during the Great Hiking Era. The cabin owners still use the original hand-crank telephone system invented by Alexander Graham Bell. Includes more history and description.
