The 49-year-old Anoakia School, facing a June deadline for relocation, has opted for local print advertising. Owner Lowry McCaslin apparently wants to develop the property at Foothill Blvd. and Baldwin Ave. However, the school also has numerous city fire code violations and a building that is not up to seismic standards. Terrance M. Towner, former Pasadena resident and school superintendent in Los Gatos, will be next superintendent for the Arcadia Unified School District. The Arcadia Board of Education selected Towner after a 4-month search. He replaces Stephen Goldstone, who left in September to become superintendent with the Chino Unified School District. Mr. Towner will earn $91,000 per year.
Police have arrested nine people who are believed to be members of a San Gabriel Valley Asian gang that has been under investigation in recent months for terrorizing local Asian youths. Four adults and five juveniles were taken into custody after police linked them with a February 15 kidnapping, attempted extortion and assault.
A many as 60 of the trees on Orange Grove Ave., the "county road" running from Michillinda Blvd. to Santa Anita Ave., could be endangered by a proposed road-widening project currently under consideration by Arcadia and Sierra Madre. The street would be widened from 30 to 36 ft. since the street is considered too narrow for the trash bins that residents often leave in the road, constituting a hazard.

The Arcadia City Council voted 4-0 in favor of the state-required plan submitted by Fountain Valley-based Rodeffer Investments that would create a landfill in an 85-acre gravel pit on the border between Arcadia and El Monte.

The Board of Education has approved a new after-school child care program to be conducted by the Santa Anita Family branch of the YMCA at the Holly Avenue Elementary School Youth Hut. About 20 children have been enrolled in the program, which can accommodate up to 35.
Plaza de las Fiestas, a new multipurpose arena in the northwest quadrant of the infield at the Santa Anita Park, has been created to accommodate Family Faire weekend outings for groups of 25 or more, as well as company picnics, concerts, trade shows, equine shows and other special occasions that can share the day with racing.

Baldwin Stocker Elementary School opened its Baldwin Stocker Information Center, complete with 16 Apple 2e computers and a computer encyclopedia stored on a single laser disc. An application for state funds to help build a commuter or light rail station in the city has been approved by the City Council. The grant would pay 50% of construction costs, excluding the money needed to buy land.
The City Council approved funding for a new guardrail along Santa Anita Canyon Road, where a motorist drove over a mountainside last year. Federal funds will cover 90% of the new guardrail costs, and the new guardrail could be in place as early as spring.
