For the third year in a row, a five-member team from Arcadia High School took top honors in the regional National Science Bowl and is headed for national competition in Washington, D.C., in May.
The Arcadia High School Constitution Team won the state level competition in Sacramento. They will now compete in the national finals in Washington, D.C., in April.

Arcadian Gary Twombley will leave Washington, D.C. to become part of the 1st group of Peace Corps volunteers to serve in Eastern Europe. Twombley, 24, is preparing with 59 other volunteers, including Elizabeth Oewn, 22, of Pasadena, for 2 years of service in Hungary.
The Oak Tree Racing Association reversed a national trend of declining on-track attendance by finishing its 28th meeting at Santa Anita Park with a 1.1% increase in on-track attendance.
The Arcadia Rotary Club awarded grants totaling $4,990 to 17 teachers at the February 13 Arcadia Board of Education meeting. Grants ranging from $175 to $300 were given to individual teachers to help with special classroom projects. The teachers represented 5 of the 6 Arcadia elementary schools, all 3 junior high schools and both Arcadia and Huntington high schools.

As part of National Police Week, a memorial ceremony was held at the Episcopal Church of Transfiguration in memory of those officers killed in 1998 in the line of duty. A photo of Albert Edward Matthies, the only Arcadia police officer ever killed in the line of duty, was on the altar.
The State Court of Appeal recently reversed a trial court ruling in the El Monte vs Rodeffer and Arcadia litigation regarding Arcadia's 1994 certification of an Environmental Impact report and approval of a Conditional Use Permit to Rodeffer Investments, Inc. to fill an abandoned sand and gravel pit located at the southern tip of Arcadia.
