Jerry Collins Picnic Pavilion dedication ceremony will be held July 19, 2016 at Wilderness Park at 2240 N. Highland Oaks Drive in Arcadia. There is a memorial plaque to commemorate his life. He was a former Director of Parks and Recreation for City of Arcadia. He started his service with City of Arcadia in 1970 and had a 24 year career. See also Arcadia Weekly, p. 1, 12, July 21, 2016.
The Wilderness Park, now to be known as the Arcadia Wilderness Preserve, will be open to the general public on weekdays and to non-profit organizations and small groups that have reservations on weekends.
View toward the east believed to be from a point about at corner of present Santa Anita and Elkins Drive in the Highland Oaks area. The large canyon opening to left side of photo would be at mouth of Big Santa Anita. Large oak on right, dirt road, white building near center of photo.
Arcadia's top stories for 1993 included the proposal for a music center at Santa Anita Park, the proposal to fill the Rodeffer Landfill, and the temporary weekend closures at Wilderness Park.
The City Council has temporarily closed Wilderness Park on weekends (at least until September 7) because of overcrowding. About 200-300 visitors use the park each weekend, although it has a capacity for 100 people and 50 parking spaces.
