Five young women were chosen for the Arcadia royal court to represent Arcadia in the Tournament of Roses. All Arcadia residents, they are: Jenny Chen, 18; Elyse Douglas, 17; Kathleen Lechler, 17; Tricia Stonecipher, 17; and Jennifer Worsley, 16. One will be chosen to be Queen at the Coronation Ball on December 9.
The Arcadia Redevelopment Agency won a $495,000 settlement for removing toxic waste from 1.6 acres of downtown Arcadia land it bought from Clifford C. Bong and Co. last year. The agency sued Bong in April of 1988 to recover the money it spent to dispose of soil contaminated with high levels of lead, cadmium and hydrocarbon wastes. The agreement was reached two days before the June 27 trial was to begin.
Susan Robertson, 48, a 4th grade teacher at Hugo Reid School for 26 years, died on July 4 after an 11-year battle with cancer. Mrs. Robertson graduated from USC in 1963 and worked for the Arcadia Unified School District, teaching at Hugo Reid School for her entire career.
The Arcadia City Council has authorized a project to build concrete sidewalks adjacent to Camino Grove, First Avenue, Hugo Reid Primary, Dana and Holly Avenue schools.
The City Council unanimously approved a zone change that would prohibit future lot splits in the Lower Rancho Area. The revision increased the minimum lot size from 15,000 to 20,000 square feet.
Two recent Arcadia High School graduates, Maret Bower and Peter Sawires, each won $1500 in an essay contest held by the Azusa Landfill Reclamation Company. The purpose of the contest was to think of ways to maintain a suitable environment in the San Gabriel Valley.

John Gottuso, an Arcadia minister, psychologist and family counselor, has been accused by two state licensing boards of sexually abusing 10 female clients. The trial is set for February 1990.
Arcadians celebrated the third annual Community Fair to raise funds for the district's schools. The event, sponsored by the Arcadia Council PTA, raised $13,000 during its first two years.
