Dr. Ed Ryan, district superintendent, told the Board of Education that the teaching staff in the Arcadia School District must be reduced next year by 30. There are several reasons for the cut, including decreased enrollment and lack of funds. Plans for that reduction and the position of the Arcadia Teachers Association are discussed.

A group of eight intends to roller skate from Arcadia to Las Vegas and back again, a trip which should set a speed and endurance record and earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. The marathon, under the leadership of Ed Schriener, hopes to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

City Council has approved a new project called Postal Alert. It provides for special stickers to be placed in mail boxes. When the mail carrier notices signs of trouble such as uncollected mail, he notifies his supervisor who directs a follow up. After October 1, participants may obtain a registration card and instructions from Arcadia post offices or the Senior Citizens office.

Jean Voznick, president of the Arcadia Teachers Association, presented the teachers' case to the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce. Some of her statements were later rebutted by Superintendent Ed Ryan.
City Council unanimously agreed to hold a June election to attempt to bail the school district out of its financial troubles. Proposition A would increase the utility tax by 2%, bringing in $550,000. Proposition B would raise the tax an additional 1% bringing $250,000 more. The funds would be for maintenance of school property and facilities used by the city.
