The Arcadia Beautiful Commission selected its winners for 1987. The awards went to homes, businesses, a church, a condominium, and a whole street, with 2 special awards given to code enforcement officers.
A team from Arcadia High School was the regional winner in the 1996 National Science Bowl. They will join other regional winners in the finals of the competition in late April in Florida.
Two candidates, Bob Kladifko (2,623) and Jim Bryant (2,497) who were defeated in the Arcadia school board election two years ago, emerged as winners in Tuesday's election. The third winner was Mike Allison (2,579). Marilyn Perkins (2,225) finished fourth and was not elected.

23 "heroes and heroines" in the Arcadia Unified School District were honored by the Board of Education in the first "Profiles in Excellence" awards. The awards were presented to "individuals who maintain a standard of excellence in their work and who represent those values and qualities which make Arcadia a special place for students." Names and positions of winners are given.
A recent court ruling that prohibits school districts from charging for bus service could prompt a restructuring of student transportation programs in Arcadia.
The Supreme Court has prohibited school districts from charging home-to-school bus fares. During the 1987-88 school year, approximately 800 students paid $59 a quarter for bus service in Arcadia.
The Arcadia High School Apache Marching Band won the Sweepstakes Award at the annual state championship All-Western Band Review for the third consecutive year which earns them the perpetual trophy. This makes the third time they have won the perpetual trophy which goes to a school that has won the Sweepstakes Award three times in a row. This is a "first" in the All-Western Band Review.
Two candidates without professional experience were the winners from among a field of 5 running for 2 seats on the Arcadia Board of Education. Mary Dougherty and Bill Spuck will officially take their posts at the July 1 meeting, replacing Carol Papay and Don Fickas. Final results: Bill Spuck (2489), Mary Dougherty (1983), Marilyn Miller Perkins (1704), Robert Harris (1232), and David Strauss (4331).
