Arcadia will have a weekly newspaper again - the ARCADIA WEEKLY. The paper will be in the same building as the old ARCADIA TRIBUNE that closed its doors in July 1992. Publisher Von Raees accepts the first subscription from Mayor Barbara Kuhn.
A $1,040 gift was presented to the Arcadia Unified School District by the Lions Club for the Lions-Quest Skills for Growing Program designed to help steer students away from alcohol and drug use.
The National Childhood Cancer Foundation has contributed $20,000 to the Arcadia Tournament of Roses to join forces in raising public awareness of childhood cancer. Survivors Emily Volk and Jeff Headley, both 8 years old, will ride on the Arcadia float in the Rose Parade.
In an effort to increase public awareness of childhood cancer, the National Childhood Cancer Foundation will once again participate as a sponsor of the Arcadia Tournament of Roses with a child survivor riding on the float in the Rose Parade.
Seven firefighters were injured in Arcadia house fire on White Oak Drive. The Arcadia Fire Department (AFD) required assistance from Monrovia, Sierra Madre, El Monte, and Los Angeles County. Six from AFD were treated at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. The seventh firefighter, from Sierra Madre Fire Department, remained hospitalized in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Pasadena. The house sustained extensive loss. Nearby residents wondered if the AFD needed so much help from outside fire departments because of recent cuts to the AFD.
Downtown 2000: is the CFRP making a difference? In 1993, Arcadia City Council and the Redevelopment agency implemented the Comprehensive Revitalization Strategy and Program, a project designed to bring a new economic vitality to the downtown district. One of the main components of the program is the Commercial Facade Rehabilitation Program (CFRP), which provides financial assistance to downtown merchants for store-front improvements. Garlan Roberson received $11,000 from the Arcadia Redevelopment Agency for improvements to his business, Sullivan's Paints. Since the facade improvements, Roberson says business has increased significantly.
Mayor Bob Harbicht will host "Speaking of Arcadia" at the Arcadia Historical Museum and will have a roundtable discussion with 5 people who lived here when Huntington Drive was two lanes and orange groves covered most of the city. "Speak of Arcadia" airs on cable channel 20.
The Arcadia Tournament of Roses may lose its primary sponsor, the National Childhood Cancer Foundation. Reasons are given why NCCF thinks it did not get the national exposure it expected.
