Some members of Arcadia Christian Academy's boys basketball team acted as heroes after a 65 year-old woman lost control of her Mercedes and ran it through a group of children and adults in Eagle Rock, where the team attended a game. The boys ran to the scene and helped lift the car off two children and an adult. There were no fatalities.
Officer Jose Ponce was sworn in to the Arcadia Police Department on Tuesday, but the department is still short-staffed by fourteen officers. The department is authorized to employ seventy-five swon officers. The shortage has caused cuts to programs. Other San Gabriel Valley police agencies are suffering from lack of qualified applicants.
A 3-year-old boy died when the car he was riding in was struck by a stolen vehicle being chased by Arcadia Police. The suspect that stole the car has been identified as Sara Bravo, 26, of La Puente.
Arcadia is teaming with Monrovia, Azusa, Covina and West Covina to form the regional Foothill Air Support Team (FAST) which will give the city police helicopter support.

The police station is scheduled to be demolished and a new one will be built behind the current facility. The project is estimated to cost $16 million. The new building will be 52,000 square feet and slated to open in the first part of 2003.
The union for the Arcadia Police Department and the Arcadia City Council have reached an agreement. The contract gives officers a 24.4% increase in salaries and benefits over the next 4 years. The department is still down by 14 officers.

Arcadia firefighters and paramedics save a boy with asthma. The boy visits the fire station and firefighters go to the boy's birthday party. Community ties are strengthened by this emergency call.
Ryan Richard Swender, of Arcadia, along with two others, plead not guilty in the December 1 stabbing of a 17-year-old boy at Memorial Park in Sierra Madre.
City administrators and negotiators for the Arcadia Police Department have not yet reached a contract agreement. Officers want an immediate 10% raise for the first year and 4% increases the second and third years. City council has offered salaries that would make Arcadia police the second or third highest paid in cities surveyed.
