An evaluation team from a consortium of Southland schools has generally commended Arcadia's Highland Oaks School. The team came up with 58 commendations, 23 suggestions and 15 recommendations.
Fourth graders in Dodie Gregg's class at Highland Oaks Elementary School created an 8 - page newspaper after interviewing friends and relatives in honor of the school's Generations Day.
Highland Oaks Elementary School's Club program connects students with interests and friends. Baton Twirling Club, Coding Club, Food Crafts Club, and Hawks Nest Community Building Club, are just a sample of the over 20 clubs offered there. Patricia Mattera, now in her 7th year as Highland Oaks Principal, first gained inspiration for the student clubs from her previous work experience.
Students at Highland Oaks Elementary School raise over $6,000 for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and much of South Asia.
For the first time Arcadia has a counselor, Eric Mordin, at the elementary level this year. At the present time he serves only Highland Oaks and Camino Grove schools.
Arcadia Unified appoints new Highland Oaks Elementary School principal, Debbie Champion.Champion began her career in Arcadia as a teacher at Holly Avenue Elementary School. She has been with the district for over 25 years.
