The Arcadia Police Department has been hit by 4 separate claims of racial and sexual discrimination and harassment in the last year. Those making accusations include Beverly Hayden, owner of the Burger Palace; Gus and Alicia Alfavo, who claim their son was harassed because he is Latino; Deborah Piere, a former probationary officer who filed a discrimination lawsuit; and a woman cadet who claimed sexual harassment and discrimination.
Arcadia Alternative High School students, sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club, have sold $4000 worth of auto aid kits made by their student-owned company, Medi-Kit.
In the wake of a fight in January between Asian American and white teenagers near Arcadia High School, police, parents and school officials have come up with a new get-tough policy to crack down on students involved in violence or drugs. Called PAXCE 2000, for "Peaceful Arcadia Through Community Efforts 2000," the program puts a police officer at the High School and three junior high schools.
Arcadia will have a weekly newspaper again - the ARCADIA WEEKLY. The paper will be in the same building as the old ARCADIA TRIBUNE that closed its doors in July 1992. Publisher Von Raees accepts the first subscription from Mayor Barbara Kuhn.
A new street in Honolulu, Hawaii, has been named Asher Court after Arcadia resident and World War II Veteran Fred Asher who saved the USS Blue at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Cal-Trans will demolish and rebuild the Santa Anita underpass of Route 210 located between Santa Anita Avenue and Baldwin Avenue exits. The bridge is being replaced for safety reasons.
More than a mascot. Schools: When a Native American group urged Arcadia High to stop using the Apache as a symbol, officials made it an educational issue to be studied--and decided by--the Student Council. Members of the Arcadia High School Student Council are scheduled today to recommend whether to keep their school mascot, the Apache warrior which has been used for 45 years.
Mayor Bob Harbicht will host "Speaking of Arcadia" at the Arcadia Historical Museum and will have a roundtable discussion with 5 people who lived here when Huntington Drive was two lanes and orange groves covered most of the city. "Speak of Arcadia" airs on cable channel 20.
In 1993 the Arcadia City Council and the Redevelopment Agency implemented the Comprehensive Revitalization Strategy Program designed to bring new economic developments to the downtown district. The streetscape construction project has been completed and the revitalization is on-going with the Commercial Facade Rehabilitation Program (CFRP) providing financial assistance for storefront improvements.
