For the first time Arcadia has a counselor, Eric Mordin, at the elementary level this year. At the present time he serves only Highland Oaks and Camino Grove schools.
A many as 60 of the trees on Orange Grove Ave., the "county road" running from Michillinda Blvd. to Santa Anita Ave., could be endangered by a proposed road-widening project currently under consideration by Arcadia and Sierra Madre. The street would be widened from 30 to 36 ft. since the street is considered too narrow for the trash bins that residents often leave in the road, constituting a hazard.
New principals have been named for three Arcadia elementary schools. Jim Gerhardt has been named to head Holly Avenue. Charles Jarboe requested a transfer from Highland Oaks and was assigned to Camino Grove. Mrs. Suzanne Burton will replace Mr. Jarboe at Highland Oaks.
A petition of 732 signatures of people opposed to the planned tennis club in the Santa Anita Debris Basin in north Arcadia was presented to the Arcadia City Council. Residents of the Highland Oaks section of Arcadia have vowed to fight the proposed tennis club by legal means if necessary.
The city of Arcadia will spend an estimated $108,875 to renovate playing fields at 3 public elementary schools: Hugo Reid, Highland Oaks and Holly Avenue, all used by the city's Recreation Department.
The C.I.A. (Citizens Infuriated With Arcadia) under the leadership of Ervin Nichols, is working to have the barriers removed that were erected at San Carlos road and Orange Grove Avenue in Arcadia.
The general plan will be reviewed by the Planning Commission. The "central area" will be the focus of study. This area runs from the 210 Foothill freeway on the north to Duarte Road on the south and from the east city boundary to Santa Anita Avenue. It also includes the commercial section west of Santa Anita Avenue and north of Huntington Drive.
The City Council was embarrassed to learn that the reservoirs at Orange Grove and Baldwin, where it was thought that tennis courts could be added for nominal costs due to an earlier reinforcing of the reservoir surfaces, will not support such a project. No tennis courts will be added.
An evaluation team from a consortium of Southland schools has generally commended Arcadia's Highland Oaks School. The team came up with 58 commendations, 23 suggestions and 15 recommendations.
As part of a $2.6 million capital improvements program, Santa Anita Park race track has built a 2-story addition to the east end of the club-house. The 2nd story patio will be open during the Oak Tree meet, with a third story to be constructed next year.
Arcadia and the Derby Restaurant have come to a tentative agreement on a land swap that would allow a Souplantation Restaurant to be built just east of the Derby in East Arcadia.
The Planning Commission directed the planning staff to prepare a resolution permitting Maranatha High School to operate at its present North Santa Anita location.
Santa Anita Park Race Track would like to build a helipad on the hillside on the north edge of its property and has sent a letter to its neighbors to the north asking if they have any objections.
