Reports on damage left by a violent windstorm. There was little damage to homes but trees were down throughout the city. The Arboretum suffered extensive damage. The Edison Company had major problems affecting 50,000 customers in the area.
After 19 years as an employee with Arcadia Unified School District, Virgil J. Goode has retired. Goode worked over the years as custodian, groundsman and bus driver.
Atlantic Richfield Corporation has contributed $50,000 toward the building of the planned Hall of Environmental Education at the Arboretum. The contribution is in addition to a recent $25,000 ARCO grant to support ongoing programs.
A pictorial history entitled "Arcadia: Where Ranch and City Meet" is being published by the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library. The book is written and compiled by Pat McAdam of the Arcadia Public Library and Sandy Snider of the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum.
Oak Tree Racing Association's autumn season will begin October 17. The 25 day session offers 16 stakes races with record purses. Several new features including Pick Six wagering will be offered.

Two elementary schools, Bonita Park and Baldwin Stocker, have been recommended for closure by the Space Utilization Committee. The Board of Education will analyze the recommendations and schedule public hearings before making a decision.
At the Board of Education meeting there was some discussion of the Space Utilization Committee's recommendation to close two elementary schools, Bonita Park and Baldwin Stocker. Robert Kladifke, a member of the committee, objected to closing the newest and most educationally modern school in the district, Baldwin Stocker. Two public hearings are scheduled.
The first public hearing on the closure of two public schools was held December 10. Most of the speakers urged the Board to look for other alternatives to closure. The savings isn't enough to justify the move. The Space Utilization Committee did not explore alternatives to closure.
Petitions are being circulated that are aimed at thwarting the possible closure of two elementary schools. The savings would amount to only .7% of an $18 million school budget - not enough to justify closing the schools, according to the parents of students at Bonita Park and Baldwin Stocker.
