The terms of G. Michael Allison, Robert Kladifko and James Bryant will expire on June 30. Bryant will stay on for another term, to be joined by newcomers Michael Lamb, 41, a 20-year resident and funeral director and Maryann Gibson, an 11-year resident and PTA Council President.
Non-teaching employees in the Arcadia Unified School district have voted against the implementation of a merit system to monitor such activities as hiring and promotion.
23 "heroes and heroines" in the Arcadia Unified School District were honored by the Board of Education in the first "Profiles in Excellence" awards. The awards were presented to "individuals who maintain a standard of excellence in their work and who represent those values and qualities which make Arcadia a special place for students." Names and positions of winners are given.
Dr. Stephen Goldstone, Arcadia Unified School District Superintendent, is leaving his post here for a similar position in Chino. He says it is an advancement for him since Chino has about 23,000 students, compared to Arcadia's 7500.
Arthur Farr, 46, the band and orchestra leader at Dana Junior High School, has been named the Arcadia Unified School District's 1990 Teacher of the Year. Farr has been teaching band and orchestra at Dana for 23 years, as well as coaching the basketball team and teaching physical education. Some Sierra Madre parents want to split from the Pasadena Unified School District and join the Arcadia Unified School District because of Arcadia's high-ranking CAP scores and low dropout rate. Members of Arcadia's Board of Education question whether they could handle the influx of new students.
Isabelle Stires is retiring after 19 years in the Arcadia Unified School District. This past year Mrs. Stires has been teaching second grade at Camino Grove School. Before that she taught second and third graded at Bonita Park School. She and her husband plan to travel.
