Arcadia High School alumnus Ray Fu is on the Team USA Chemistry Olympiad Team, to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad in Azerbaijan, July 20-29.
Hope International Church of Arcadia, located at 1741 S. Baldwin Avenue, welcomes new pastor Reverend Sam Lee into the community. Installation service on September 29.
David and Kathleen Berkus, of Arcadia, donate $5 million to Occidental College, creating an endowment that will enhance the college's ability to stay current with the latest advances in technology. In recognition of the Berku family's donation, the dormitory Rangeview Hall will be renamed Berkus Residence Hall. A formal dedication will take place September 29. David Berkus is a 1962 Occidental College graduate.
Doug Martin Contracting, Inc. will handle Arcadia's annual slurry seal project. The project will take place on city streets between Duarte Road and the south city limit, and between Santa Anita Avenue and the east city limit, started July 29, to be done August 23, 2013.
Sneak preview for HBO's "Luck" on December 11. It is a highly anticipated show on HBO starring Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz and others. It is filmed in large part at Santa Anita Park and written and produced by David Milch. The show's official pilot premiere on HBO is January 29, 2012.
The Arcadia County Park swimming pool will be closed for the summer, to be demolished and rebuilt at a later date. The pool is 70 years old and officially known as the Norman S. Johnson Aquatic Center. On July 19, a chlorine spill sent 17 children to the hospital. The repairs would cost $80,000, so the County chose to not reopen the pool for the three weeks left of this summer.
Monrovia man David King Brewster has been charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, as he became combative and began fighting with two Arcadia police officers for no apparent reason, on July 6, 2015 in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive. Brewster may have been under the influence of a controlled substance. He punched one officer in the face and choked the other officer in an attempt to use cause serious or fatal injury to him.
New development and businesses in Downtown Arcadia. The Metro Gold Line train has brought renewed success and energy to Downtown Arcadia. A mixed-use project near the Gold Line's Arcadia station will include over 16,000 square feet of commercial space, 38 residential units, and 110 new parking spaces are under construction, as is a 4,000 square foot Art Deco style office building at 130 S. First Avenue. Last year, Mr. Lowe Brewing Co. opened Arcadia's first microbrewery and in July, Vendome Wine & Spirits opened at 103 E. Santa Clara St. Article by Mayor Peter Amundson.
Six Arcadia police recruits graduate from Rio Hondo Police Academy. They are pictured with Arcadia Police Chief Bob Guthrie and captains Larry Goodman and Paul Foley.
