Arcadia City Council moved forward Tuesday night in effort to bring a Vons supermarket into West Arcadia. First action was consolidation of nine lots at 745-809 West Naomi Ave. and 812-828 West. Duarte Road into one parcel. Approved 3-1
Construction of a Vons Market west of Baldwin Avenue between Duarte Road and Naomi Avenue may depend on whether the East Pasadena Water Company accepts the City Council's proposal allowing the city to extend its line into the water company's territory at the western end of the Vons development. The East Pasadena Water Company's lines are too small to be effective in case of fire.
The Arcadia Planning Commission approved a request for a variation in the distance between buildings for a proposed 20-unit condominium project at 412-422 California St. and 417-421 Diamond St. The variance would allow a 10-18 foot distance between buildings, instead of the standard 20-foot requirement.
The Hughes-El Rancho Market is to be razed to make room for the construction of an entirely new building. The new market will be twice the size of the old. Several shops in the center will vacate to make way for the expansion.
"Wild About Reading" is the theme for the summer program to be sponsored by the Jerry Broadwell Children's Room of Arcadia Public Library. Registration begins June 6 through July 18.
Reverend Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church may take legal action against the City. On April 1, the City Council turned down a request from the Church to solicit funds within City limits.
Three offices of the Automobile Club of Southern California will be combined when a new Arcadia district office opens in 1989 on Huntington Drive between Second and Fifth Streets.
An ordinance will be introduced for first reading by Arcadia City Council whereby the city would receive .33 of 1% of parimutuel wagers at Santa Anita Park race track. If ordinance is approved, city would eliminate admission tax.
The Arcadia City Council approved a 5% tax on interstate and international telephone calls over the strong objections of residents. The tax, which will cost about $.40 per person per month, is expected to generate $225,000 in city revenues, which will help close the gap between the city's general fund expenditures and revenue.
Susan Clavey, the mother of Tanya Clavey (the 16-year old girl who died following a 400-foot plunge off the Santa Anita Canyon Road) asked the Arcadia City Council to close the road's gate at dusk to prevent further fatalities. The gate, normally locked at 10 PM, was unlocked when the accident occurred at 10:15 PM.
City Council granted Temple Shaarei Tikvah Synagogue the right to operate a preschool for children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 5. Public debate on the matter is reviewed.
Petitions are being circulated that are aimed at thwarting the possible closure of two elementary schools. The savings would amount to only .7% of an $18 million school budget - not enough to justify closing the schools, according to the parents of students at Bonita Park and Baldwin Stocker.
There are now no through streets in Arcadia incorrectly posted with "Not a Through Street" signs, according to Chester Howard, Arcadia's Public Works Director.
Two Charter amendments will be on the April 9th ballot: 1. Would increase from 2 to 3 the number of consecutive 4 year terms a Councilman may serve and change the residence requirement from 2 years to 1. 2. Provides for a municipal election in February with offices to be filled by those candidates who receive the highest number of votes. However, if no candidate receives at least 40% of the votes cast, a run-off election would be held in April.
Santa Anita Park will have thoroughbred racing from December 26 through April 22, a season expanded by two weeks. The horse racing bill AB 3383 provided other changes in the sport that will affect Santa Anita Park.
