Jazz musician and historian John Lucas died in March of complications from pneumonia at age 84. The Arcadia resident overcame rheumatioid arthritis to become an accomplished performer.
Longtime San Gabriel Valley pediatrician "Bud" Koch died Friday of cancer in his Ventura home. He was 72. Koch worked on staff of the Arcadia Methodist Hospital from 1956 -1981.
Los Angeles County home sales dropped 8.6% last month from a year earlier. Arcadia, however, shows a 4.1% increase in median home price, from a year ago December. Arcadia's median home price was $692,000 last month. Figures for California state, Los Angeles and other San Gabriel Valley cities are shown.
Monica Rodriguez, a 27 year old pregnant woman from El Monte, died at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. The family believes she died of complications from the H1N1 virus (swine flu). The family is considering legal action against Greater El Monte Community Hospital because she went there to be treated October 14 and 15, but was sent away with medicine and cough syrup, instead of admitting her.
For years, long-time Arcadia resident Kurt W. Rose designated $50 a year to the Methodist Hospital Foundation. Mr. Rose, who died last year at the age of 91, left $4.2 million to the Methodist Hospital Foundation, the largest individual contribution in the hospital's 95-year history.
Guilty verdict delivered to Lawrence Joseph Farry, 25, who was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter, in the death of former Arcadia resident Joan Milazzo in August last year. Farry struck Milazzo with his car in the Del Sur area of North County San Diego. Milazzo grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, graduated from Alverno High School in Sierra Madre and was a member of St. Rita Catholic Parish in Sierra Madre.
Arcadia police officer Luis Vicuna received the Arcadia Police Department's Life Saving Medal last week for helping save the life of 76-year old James Chen, who collapsed at the Arcadia Sports Fitness Club late last year. Police Chief Neal Johnson, 59, will retire on December 31st after serving the city for 38 years. He plans to work for an international security management company and open an office for the firm in Arcadia.
Sidney Terrance Johnson of Los Angeles arrested for the freeway shooting death of 35-year-old Bertha Hernandez of Monrovia, on the 210 Freeway in Arcadia, which occurred on Saturday, September 4, 2021. Johnson has been charged with murder.
