Creative Housing Options in Arcadia (CHOA). Local efforts to address the lack of affordable housing and homelessness. On Saturday, April 20, 2024, a group of about 30 community members met at The Hills Church in Arcadia for a 2-hour "Sharing Session" to learn about what is being done in the city to address these issues. Star Wars celebrities to gather for fan event at Chalice Collectibles in Arcadia to raise funds for charity. Chalice Collectibles is one of the biggest independent retail stores selling Funko Pops (mostly vinyl pop culture figurines). Chris Bartlett, the voice and human behind C-3PO and 1-JAC on the Disney Plus streaming series "Obi Wan Kenobi," Kat Cressida, the voice of Princess Leia in "Star Wars: Rebellion," "X-Wing Alliance," and "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron," Misty Rosas, who portrayed Kuiil and Frog Lady on "The Mandalorian," and Leilani Shiu, who portrayed Teeka the Jawa on "Obi Wan Kenobi," Tatooine Jawa and offworld Jawa on "The Mandalorian" and other roles on "The Book of Boba Fett" will be there to sign toys and stuff. Pasadena Symphony announces Brett Mitchell as new music director, beginning a 5-year tenure on April 1. The Pasadena Symphony makes up half of the Pasadena Symphony and Pops Organization, and officials said Michael Feinstein will continue as conductor of the Pasadena Pops, which presents an annual summer concert series at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
Murder trial. Deyun Shi, man accused of revenge on family. The prosecutor said Shi, a Chinese citizen, had plan to flee to Hong Kong after killing his 2 teenage nephews in Arcadia and an attack against his wife. Shi faces life in prison without parole if convicted in the January 22, 2016 killings of 15-year-old Anthony Lin and 16-year-old William Lin, and of injuring his wife the day before. The boys were bludgeoned to death in their home in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue in Arcadia.
2024 ELECTIONS - Pasadena City College: Four candidates compete for two Board of Trustee seats on the March 5 election. Voters elect a trustess from each of the seven districts in an area that includes Arcadia, a portion of El Monte, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, Rosemead, San Marino, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, and Temple City. Area 2 candidates are Kevin D. Strotz and James Aragon. Area 6 candidates are Ryan Liu and John Quintanilla.
Arcadia High School girls soccer team earns top seeds in playoffs. Arcadia (14-2-1) which went undefeated in winning the Pacific League title, will be chasing its first championship since 1993, when it plays host to the wild-card winner--either Rio Mesa or California--in the first round as the top seed in Division 4.
Electrical accident blamed for deadly house fire in unincorporated county area near Arcadia that left 3 people dead and 2 others injured. It happened to a two-story home in the 5300 block of Tyler Avenue.

Tough task for no. 15 for Rio Hondo Prep's Kares football team. Rio Hondo Prep has 66 boys on its campus in Arcadia. Top-seeded Rio Hond Prep (12-2) will travel to take on no. 3 seed Santa Monica (9-4) on Friday in the CIF Southern Section Divion 9 championship. Pictures of the Kares players at a luncheon.
Los Angeles County Arboretum celebrates 75th anniversary with an Arboretum Foundation fundraiser event honoring Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger for her ongoing support. The event raised $241,000 for the education programs and care of the 125 acre Arboretum gardens and landmark structures. Lightscape, a 1-mile trail of art installations that celebrates the holiday season at Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, runs selected dates November 17 through January 2, at 301 North Baldwin Avenue.

12th horse dies this year from training injury at Santa Anita Park. A 2-year-old bay colt named Captain Maverick, that had yet to run a race, has died.
Los Angeles County National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists named. They will now compete for a share of scholarships worth almost $28 million. Those from Arcadia High School students are Isaac Cheng, Hongji Dai, Casey R. Kim, Kaitlyn A. Kwan, Caroline J. Ji, Jeffrey Oo, Steven H. Shi, Philip Tan, William Wong, Felicia Ye, Katelyn A. Yu.
Pasadena Pops presents in concert "Michael Feinstein Sings Broadway" at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, July 29. Future concerts include "The Music of Queen" on August 26 and "Hollywood Blockbusters" on September 9.
